Literacy
The Hartland-Lakeside K–3 literacy curriculum is grounded in a structured literacy approach, providing explicit, systematic instruction that addresses all subskills of reading—including phonemic awareness, phonics, building background knowledge, fluency, oral language, vocabulary, and comprehension. Instruction is carefully designed to build foundational skills in a coherent, sequential manner—drawing from multiple curricula to provide the most comprehensive approach—ensuring all students develop the tools needed for proficient reading.
The curriculum also includes daily opportunities for authentic reading and writing, text-based discussions, and writing in response to reading. With a focus on student choice and access to a wide range of texts, our instruction is both developmentally appropriate and engaging—laying a strong foundation for lifelong literacy.

Math
The Hartland-Lakeside K-3 mathematics curriculum provides opportunities for all students to be successful in math through the use of research-based teaching methods and visual models. Our goal is for all learners to know, use, and enjoy mathematics. Students learn mathematics by doing mathematics, rather than watching someone else do mathematics.
Our approach to math fosters a collaborative and problem-solving environment and connects to real-world applications. This approach views math as a tool for intellectual development that encourages critical thinking, logical reasoning, and perseverance through activities like group work, guided exploration, and real-world modeling.
Our curriculum is based on the Wisconsin State Standards for Mathematics, including the content Standards and the Standards for Mathematical Practice. We prioritize conceptual understanding over memorization and have a student-centered approach to learning. This approach recognizes that each student learns differently, so it incorporates a variety of methods with manipulatives and hands-on activities. The ultimate goal is to build student confidence and equip them with versatile skills for future learning and life.

Through this process, students collaborate with others and build real-world skills in critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving.

The Hartland Lakeside’s K-5 Science curriculum is aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Through engaging and relevant National Geographic content, students learn about real-world explorers and scientists who bring scientific concepts to life. Students develop foundational knowledge in Physical, Life, and Earth Science before applying their understanding through hands-on investigations and inquiry-based learning experiences. In addition, students in grade K-5 engage in Project Lead the Way (PLTW) units, where students are immersed in hands-on activities, projects, and problems that relate to the real world and support learning that blends computer science, engineering, and biomedical science.

Social Studies
Hartland Lakeside’s Social Studies program helps students understand the importance of historical events and their impact. Through “Thinking Like a Historian” and inquiry-based activities, students practice critical historical thinking skills such as analyzing primary sources, comparing perspectives, and connecting the past to the present. Sixth grade explores early world history, beginning with the Stone Age and continuing through the end of the Middle Ages. Seventh grade focuses on U.S. history from colonization through Reconstruction, while eighth grade covers Westward Expansion through World War II.

Science at Hartland Lakeside is a hands-on and inquiry-based program that engages students in exploring real-world experiences and solving problems through questioning, investigation, and collaboration. Students’ own questions drive the learning as they uncover scientific ideas and build understanding through evidence. Using a consistent set of instructional routines, students progress through cycles of inquiry, such as, asking questions, investigating, analyzing evidence, and refining their explanations. Our goal is to develop students’ capacity to think, read, write, and argue like scientists.
