Parent Resources

An Excellent website offering information regarding dyslexia for educators and parents: http://www.brightsolutions.us/

There are many resources for parents to gain information about special education services, rights of children and parents, and the obligation of schools.  We have found the following to be quite useful in the actual development of partnerships and in providing necessary information for parents or teachers to make informed decisions.Council for Exceptional Children (CEC)
This organization provides a variety of resources for parents of children with disabilities as well as for professionals who work with these children.  It offers information for support, changes in the law and professional development.  It presents not only the parents' perspective but also views special needs children from the eyes of the teacher.  It is useful and we encourage you to become familiar with it.

Wisconsin Dept. of Public Instruction - Special Education
Directors of Special Education are encouraged to use this site often to keep current with trends and legal issues as they pertain to special education (laws/procedures/bulletins link).  However, there is much more that may be of use to you.  We encourage parents and teachers to explore this site when questions arise or if they just are curious.  Good luck.

Parent Training Modules on Promoting Children's Social and Emotional Skills:
The Center on the Social and Emotional Foundations for Early Learning (CSEFEL) has created Parent Training Modules which provide information for families on promoting children's social and emotional skills, understanding their problem behaviors, and using positive approaches to help them learn appropriate behaviors.  The modules are available online at www.vanderbilt.edu/csefel/parent.html.

Family Involvement Resources:

The Peer Power Program:  This is an innovative program for youth in transition.  Independent Living Center Wisconsin is offering grants for local agencies.  The link with information and application is available at www.wcdd.org/grants_contracts/2009/Peer_Power_RFP.pdf.

 Assistive Technology Library

Some children require adaptations in how they receive their instruction if they are to benefit from it.  This is called "assistive technology."  The need for and type of assistive technology services are determined by the IEP committee is to allow the child to receive a Free Appropriate Public Education which in turn will insure maximum benefit from the educational environment.

The Hartland Schools recognizes that to profit from their education many special needs students will require unique assistance in the form of special physical accommodations to their instruction.  We have developed a library of materials that are designed to positively augment the curriculum/instruction of some special needs students.  We also have a coordinator (Keli Melcher) who will help the IEP team determine the necessity of assistive technology.  I would suggest contacting Keli as a first step to understanding just what assistive technology is.

Keli Melcher can be contacted at 262-369-6720.  Her e-mail address is kmelcher@hartlake.org.  The assistive technology library is cataloged within the North Shore Middle School library catalog.  The library catalog can be searched online. See the North Shore Library Media Center web page for directions.

The Hartland-Lakeside School District strongly believes in keeping parents and professionals well informed regarding current trends, topics and critical issues as they relate to special needs students.  We believe this strengthens the parent/school partnership and enhances the decision making process.  Toward this end we are participating in a consortium, which arranges and presents various topics of interest to parents and teachers alike.  Presentations by a variety of selected professionals will be on a monthly basis and there will be no charge for those who attend.  The topics, presenters and locations will be available on this link to our website on a semi-annual  basis.  We encourage you to check here to see if there might be anything of interest to you.  For additional information or to preregister contact Edie Scott at ediescott50@yahoo.com
